Happy 2021!

 Dear Hooks 'n Tales Friends,

I'm so thankful to you all for making 2020 bearable for me. I've really enjoyed reading the comments and stories that you have shared. We truly are a connected community of crocheters. It's no small achievement we survived 2020 without losing our marbles. Perhaps we have lost a few but no matter. If you're reading this, and feeling a little dejected, a little hopeless, worried, or fearful BUT you're still up every day, taking that shower, dressing for the day ahead, making beds, preparing meals, boiling a kettle for a fresh pot of coffee or tea, feeding your fur-babies or human babies, doing laundry, watering your garden or not killing your house plants, working full time or part-time, taking care of elderly family members, planning school-lessons or any number of mundane yet necessary daily tasks...then you are a bright and shining STAR! If you're not managing even the basics, I completely get the struggle and I want you to know that you are beloved and appreciated no matter how you show up for each day. Keep in mind that a star still twinkles no matter how close or far it is. Shine on.πŸ’—

2021 will bring unique challenges still. This horrible Pandemic isn't going away anytime soon. Regardless, hang in there and shine your light. Last year I asked what your New Year's Resolutions were for 2020? Many of you Lovelies replied that you never make them! In retrospect, just as well, because all good plans made by mice and men definitely did go asunder in 2020. I'm big on planning but what 2020 taught me is that it's good to plan but even better to adapt. I'm training myself to take each day as it comes then see whether I can get through it without having a hissy fit if things slide sideways. I feel too that we are all shedding old skins. There was us pre-2020 and then us post 2020. We have all changed, I think? I am sad for what we have lost; our pre-2020 lives, for some of us our jobs, our health, and dearly loved family members and friends. I have had to dig deep to scrape up some courage so that I can welcome 2021 as a wonderful opportunity, a rebirth, filled with budding possibilities and fresher perspectives. For me, The Chrysalis Throw will always be representative of this historic time.

This short poem by Ralph Waldo Emerson has been a daily encouragement for me. Perhaps more of a war-cry! I've printed this out in large type then taped it to the wall in front of my work table. That way, every time I look up I'll be reminded to not sweat the small stuff. To worry less about what the future may bring and take care of each day as the gift it really is. This too: " You normally have to be bashed about a bit by life to see the point of daffodils, sunsets and uneventful nice days" - Alain de Botton.

2020 has made a bit of a Philosopher of us all, right?😊

" Write it on your heart

that every day is the best day of the year,

He is rich who owns the day, and no one

owns the day who allows it to be invaded

with fret and anxiety.

Finish each day and be done with it.

You have done what you could.

Some blunders and absurdities, no doubt

crept in.

Forget them as soon as you can,

tomorrow is a new day;

begin it well and serenely, with too high a spirit

to be cumbered with your old nonsense.

This day is too dear,

with its hopes and invitations,

to waste a moment on yesterdays "

Please stay safe, take care of yourself, and don't forget deep, deep breaths.πŸ’—

πŸ’— Much love and warm HUGS!

Jen

PS: Lovelies, let me know what you will take and what you'll leave behind from your journey through 2020? What are your wishes for 2021? Don't forget to leave your Ravelry name. I'm giving away 20 copies of The Chrysalis Throw today!

  1. Happy New Year ❤️

I'm definitely taking the thankfulness I feel for our home and health with me into the new year - the gratitude for making and the comfort it brings.

I'm trying to leave behind expectation. Of myself mainly. Not all days have to be perfect. Some days need to be quiet. Recharging.

Wishing you lots of peace and creativity!

  2. Thank you so much for this amazing and eloquent post, Jen! You seem to know exactly how I feel!! ❤️❤️❤️
I was very lucky because 2020, while difficult, was definitely not so bad for me as it was for others. I’ve had worse years. And it forced me to make some long-overdue changes in my life. So I begin 2021 holding the reins of my life again (as much as we ever are!), taking it one day at a time, and so very grateful for all the wonderful people I’ve met and friends I’ve made online in the crochet community this past year.
Happy New Year lovely lady, you’re wonderful!!

  3. Hello Jen, there are a couple of things I will take through to 2021. The first one is that we as a world are in this together. Reading the comments and stories from women from around the world shows that we are so similar in our worries and what makes us happy. (and sad at times). 2020 was a year of upheaval in many ways, our youngest left home and we were going to travel this big country of ours, Australia. We were able to travel a little, mainly to visit children (far and wide) in between lock downs and I think 2021 will be similar, so we are taking our lives one day at a time now. A little work, a little rest and a little play. Wishing everyone blessings over the coming year and looking forward to seeing so many versions of your wonderful patterns. SusanMutton

  5. Happy new year Jen I will take from this horrenous year that we are survivors and that here in Australia we were far less affected than other countries, but the virus is not one with us yet we have 2 states fighting the spread at the moment. Continue to stay safe Jen I am lucky in that I live in a very small town so stay homw as much as possible and stay away from public spaces when the many tourists arrive. Rav heddy56

  6. I am taking away GOD’s mercy, love and protection he has given us in this year gone, I will leave behind the anxiety and worry on days when my trust has weakened or was been tested. I look forward in 2021 for a year full of hope and adventure. Every day the sun shines is a glorious day. 🌸🌸🌸

  7. What a beautiful post, thank you!
I will take every day as it comes and enjoy the little happy things in life. I'm actually doing that for years so it's nothing new for 2021. Last year I made 2 persons happy with your beautiful Meringspoort Heart. They are sick and as it is difficult to find words I showed my compassion this way. It was very much appreciated.
Another goal is to make more of your designs, but have 2 WIPS to finish first.
I wish you and the wonderful Noelene a wonderful and creative 2021.
    Kind regards

  9. Good morning Jen and Happy New year to you and yours. In this new year of 2021 I plan to relax my mind more. Try not to expect so much of myself. Crochet helps me do this. Also to spend as much time with my loved ones as possible, as 2020 and the pandemic has made me realize how much I miss each and everyone of my loved ones.

  16. Such a lovely piece of writingπŸ’•. I admire you for ur humane and sensitive nature. Mmm what I have learned from 2020 is that life is a lot more than what v actually think of it. N survival is surely possible without soooo many things n stuff which we considered compulsive. It provided me with a precious opportunity to think n sit back n analyse the real meaning of life. Am highly grateful to God for every moment of health, happiness, contentment n gratitude. I feel immense pleasure to express my love for hooks n tales. It is my saviour it surely kept me sane. When ppl around me were getting upset about that tricky virus I was busy in counting my stitches n following ur warm n cosy tutorials. I wish to enter 2021 with full optimism n enthusiasm cos I strongly believe that positivity has an immense power to revert things. The way v think is the way v see n perceive n reflect n the beautiful cycle continues. Lots of luv πŸ’•πŸ’•πŸ’•

  17. I'm leaving behind negative thinking about myself. I am going to keep working on getting closer with my kids before they leave the house. I used to complain that they aren't "on their own" yet, but I really enjoyed having them home in 2020. I'm no longer in a hurry for them to move out. It will happen when it happens!
Wishing you all the best for 2021!! I can't wait to see what you come up with this year!

  18. Hi Jen, Happy New Year. I've taken from 2020 that people really do need others. It was heartbreaking to hear of so many having to be alone while ill or dying. On the other hand, I found many people wanting to help others in whatever way they can, no matter how small a gesture. I hope that in 2021, we get rid of all the bad and keep the good.

  25. Hi Jen, as I reflect on 2020 I try to find the positive parts in it. Like being able to spend more time with my hobby( wrong was using a lot of time before this with my hobby lol). Actually 2020 taught us how to slow down again although many didn't like to do that, some of us remember a time that was slower and less rushed. It also brought to our attention that there are still more injustices going on in this world than we really understood before. More people's hearts were opened to this and showed more compassion and empathy than has been shown for many years. New language is used for old problems but the problems are still there and we are working on them. We have realized we need to come together more as human beings and work together to save humanity. We slowed down the pollution in the world and places that haven't seen blue skies and night stars were awe struck by getting to see them again. People are using their minds again and thinking whether they are for or against things at least they are thinking again. Computers started having a better reputation allowing families to communicate and actually see their loved ones during the lockdowns, and probably spending more time talking to family than has happened for a while with everyone having busy lives. Many have opened their minds to the universe and it is good. In 2021 I am hoping we continue the trend of learning more about ourselves and our planet and universe even when this virus has been brought under control and people can mingle again. The Happiest of New Year's and thank you for your face book page as well as your web site and your unique patterns. my ravelry name is psych41.... :)

  37. Happy new year to all !!

Love the poem by Ralph Waldo Emerson . We so very nearly lost my Dad in 2019 and because of this I spent a lot of time away from my home looking after my mum & then dad when he came out of hospital. Consequently I felt I needed to redress the balance in 2020 by looking after my own health & family. Little did I know how 2020 would pan out; we worked together as a family and have come out of it much leaner. At 53 I've now learnt to enjoy exercise, I'm about 3 stone (40 pound) lighter. My weight has blighted my physical and mental health for as long as I can remember. I think that 2021 will be a continuation of my journey and although Covid is a very destructive virus it has given me the impetus to get my life in gear.

  38. Hi there Jen and a very Happy New Year to you. I have never suffered with so much anxiety before this ghastly pandemic attacked us. Working at a surgery has been such a challenge but as a team we all were there supporting each other which was marvellous. Crochet has certainly helped take my mind off into a direction where I wasn’t thinking dark thoughts.
So I’m taking positivity and gratitude through to 2021.

  43. Hi Jen and crochet family!
I enjoy very much the feeling of unity in this maybe not so small community. It is wonderful to see the support for each other, to read your warm words, everyone. Crochet and non-crochet related. That is something I wish will continue for the years ahead - the way people feel more connected.
Jen, I am very often without words when I read in your blog something I've been reflecting on the days before. The collective conciousness I guess, who knows. And today is no exception. Honestly, I've never heard of Alain de Botton before, but that quote.. just perfectly describes it for me. The previous years seemed to train me for this past one and so many times I told people there's nothing wrong with "uneventful nice days". It's okay to live not so spectacular and exciting movie-like lives, as long as we're fine and being able to keep on doing what we do each day. Life itself is enough of a rollercoaster. Hopefully, the ride will be safe and fun, not so bumpy and fast all the time, so we can enjoy more of the view :)
Happy New Year, everyone and good luck on winning! I enjoy my copy and wish you happy hooking all year long!
